A step-by-step first-login guide for Microsoft accounts, covering password setup, MFA prompts, and the initial security checks users need to complete.

Due to the unfortunate rise in identity theft, Microsoft is continuously beefing up the ID creation process. Consequently, this presents more and more hurdles for the user to navigate, especially if you are unfamiliar with the interface. Hopefully this step by step guide will help.

Setup Initial Login

This is critical. Without logging in for the first time, you will not be able to reset your own password later down the track.

  • Go to https://login.microsoftonline.com/ on your computer browser.
  • Sign in with your company email and the microsoft password given by your IT admin.

  • Set your own password.

  • Click Next
  • It is recommended to use a different authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator) on your phone so you don’t get locked out. Open it on your phone and add a new entry. Then click Next.

  • Scan the QR code with your phone. Once the entry on phone is created, click Next.

  • Enter the 6-digit code shown in your phone’s authenticator app. Then click Next.
  • Select the right country code and enter in your mobile no. Then click Next.
  • Enter in the 6-digit code you received in your mobile sms. Then click Next.

You have now completed the initial setup and will have your Microsoft account page loaded.

Proceed to logout of the page before quitting the browser app.

You are now ready to log in and activate the Microsoft apps. Please see here for the guide.
